Valves are present in virtually every industrial process, playing a critical role in controlling, isolating, and regulating fluid flow. They are widely used in industries such as water and wastewater treatment, mining operations, power generation, and the processing of oil, gas, and petroleum, where they ensure safe and efficient transport of fluids under varying pressure and temperature conditions.
They are also essential in food manufacturing, where hygiene and precise control are crucial, as well as in chemical and plastic production, where valves must handle corrosive, hazardous, or high-temperature media. Across all these sectors, valves are fundamental components that directly impact process reliability, safety, and operational efficiency.

People in developed nations use valves in their daily lives, including plumbing valves such as taps for tap water, gas control valves on cookers, small valves fitted to washing machines and dishwashers, safety devices fitted to hot water systems, and poppet valves in car engines, where they are essential for controlling intake and exhaust cycles with high precision. In all these applications, valves ensure safe operation, efficient fluid control, and protection of equipment.
In nature there are also valves, for example one-way valves in veins controlling blood circulation, and heart valves controlling the flow of blood in the chambers of the heart and maintaining the correct pumping action, demonstrating that unidirectional flow control is a fundamental principle both in engineering and biological systems.
Valves may be operated manually, either by a handle, lever, pedal, or wheel, especially in simple systems where direct human control is sufficient. They may also be automatic, driven by changes in pressure, temperature, or flow, which is critical for safety and process stability.
These changes can act upon a diaphragm or a piston, which in turn activates the valve; common examples include safety valves fitted to hot water systems or boilers, designed to prevent overpressure and potential system failure or explosion.
More complex control systems use valves that require automatic control based on an external input (for example, regulating flow through a pipe to a changing set point). These systems require an actuator, which will stroke (move) the valve according to its input signal and configuration, allowing the valve to be positioned with high accuracy. This enables precise and continuous control of variables such as flow, pressure, temperature, or level, which is essential in industrial processes like oil & gas, power generation, chemical plants, and water treatment systems.
From an engineering perspective, valves in automated systems are often integrated into control loops (PID control systems), where their performance directly impacts process efficiency, energy consumption, and operational safety. Therefore, proper selection, sizing, and maintenance of valves are critical factors in ensuring reliable and optimized system performance.
