GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

DAVINCI SURGE ANTICIPATION VALVES are hydraulically operated diaphragm valves developed to protect pumping systems and pipelines against dangerous pressure surges caused by sudden changes in flow velocity. Unlike conventional relief valves that respond only after pressure has increased, this valve detects the initial pressure drop associated with an abrupt pump stoppage and opens in advance of the returning high-pressure wave. 

During normal operation, the valve remains closed. In the event of a power failure, emergency pump shutdown, or unexpected pump trip, the first low-pressure wave activates the anticipation pilot, causing the main valve to open rapidly. When the returning high-pressure wave reaches the pumping station, the valve is already open and safely discharges the excess pressure through a bypass, reservoir, drain, or suitable outlet. 

 

The control system combines low-pressure anticipation and high-pressure relief functions. The low-pressure pilot responds to the initial pressure reduction, while the high-pressure pilot opens the valve whenever system pressure exceeds the preset maximum value. After the transient condition has passed, the valve closes gradually to restore normal operation without creating an additional surge. 

 

Its principal advantage is the ability to anticipate and dissipate a pressure surge before it reaches its maximum intensity. This helps protect pumps, pipelines, check valves, fittings, seals, measuring instruments, and other hydraulic equipment from excessive mechanical stress, vibration, leakage, and premature failure.

 

Available in sizes from DN50 to DN800 mm, the valve incorporates a high-strength ductile iron body designed for demanding water-service installations. All iron components are protected by a fusion-bonded epoxy coating, providing effective corrosion resistance and reliable long-term performance.

The main operating mechanism features a top- and seat-ring-guided stem and diaphragm assembly, ensuring accurate alignment, smooth movement, and dependable response during emergency operating conditions. Its nylon-reinforced diaphragm withstands repeated pressure cycles, while the corrosion-resistant stainless steel seat and disc-retainer ring provide durable sealing and extended service life.

 

The valve’s globe-pattern body provides excellent hydraulic characteristics and stable operation under changing pressure and flow conditions. It also ensures drip-tight shut-off during normal service, preventing unnecessary discharge when the system pressure remains within the established operating range.

The valve is normally installed off-line on a branch connection downstream of the pumping equipment or check valve. Its hydraulically powered control circuit operates independently of an external electrical supply, enabling dependable protection even during a power failure. Electrically assisted configurations may also be provided where integration with pump controls or automation systems is required. 

The design allows direct access to the internal assembly from the valve cover. Inspection, pilot adjustment, and maintenance can be performed without removing the main valve from the pipeline, reducing service interruptions, labour requirements, and operating costs.

 

DAVINCI SURGE ANTICIPATION VALVES are particularly suitable for municipal water supply networks, pumping stations, transmission mains, irrigation systems, water treatment plants, industrial facilities, mining installations, reservoir lines, cooling-water systems, and fire protection networks. They are especially recommended for long pipelines, high-head pumping systems, installations with rapid changes in flow, and facilities exposed to sudden pump shutdowns.

Manufacture and performance comply with EN 1074-5, with design and testing conducted according to BS EN 1074-5, ISO 5208, BS EN 12266-1, and BS EN 558-1. Flanged connections are available in PN10, PN16, PN25, and ANSI Class 150, while face-to-face dimensions conform to EN 558-1, Series 1.

 

Designed for water applications, the valve is available with pressure ratings of 1.0 MPa, 1.6 MPa, and 2.5 MPa, and is suitable for working temperatures from −10 °C to 80 °C. Pressure testing is performed according to EN 12266-1, Leakage Rate A, including a body test pressure of 1.5 × PN and a seat test pressure of 1.1 × PN.

The applicable requirements of the EU Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU are observed. Products up to DN300 are excluded under Article 1, §2(b), while sizes from DN350 to DN600 are classified under Risk Category I, Module A.

 

A complete range of low- and high-pressure pilots, filters, pressure gauges, isolation valves, sensing lines, needle valves, and hydraulic control accessories is available for adaptation to each pumping system. Optional V-Port trim and double-chamber configurations may also be supplied for specialized hydraulic conditions. Please consult the factory to determine the appropriate pressure settings, discharge capacity, opening sequence, and configuration for each installation.
