THE ANCIENT MAYA CHULTUNS FOR WATER STORAGE (Read in 1 minute)
The Ancient Maya Population in the region faced the problem of a lack of water, rivers, springs and wells. For their watter supply, they constructed Chultuns (Cisterns) and Aguadas (Hollows) in the ground to collect rainwater. Most chultuns were bottle-shaped underground storage chambers, carved out of the relatively soft limestone bedrock. They were often plastered with a thick coating of lime stucco. Archaeologists have discovered that most chultuns were constructed in places where natural cenotes were absent. Chultuns were rather common in southern Mesoamerica and they were most like used to store rain water and functioned as cisterns for potable water

La carencia del agua fue resuelta por los antiguos Mayas precolombinos en Mesoamérica mediante obras hidráulicas para el agua potable, como los chultunes. La mayoría de los chultunes son sistemas de captación y almacenamiento pluvial compuesto de una cámara subterránea en forma de una botella de barro. Las entradas de éstos estaban rodeadas por complejas canalizaciones que dirigían el agua de lluvia hacia el interior de ellos durante las estaciones lluviosas. La mayor parte de estos yacimientos arqueológicos funcionaron como cisternas para el agua potable. Los arqueólogos han descubierto que la
mayoría de los chultunes fueron construidos en lugares donde se carecía de la cercanía de los cenotes naturales.
